Viru Misses A Deserved Ton!!!

The series is turning out to be a humdinger and rightly so as predicted at the begining of the series. What a wonderful response from team India after a lackadaisical performance in the first match against New Zealand, they knew they had to win this match and win big in order to have some realistic hope of qualifying for the finals and rightly they did so. Even before the match started things did not seem to be going right for the team with Yuvraj Singh out with dengue and Nehra being doubtful for the match, the onus falling on the younger lot to come up trumps and as has been the trend this entire series from the test matches Dhoni lost another toss which further seem to compound the problems. This time though the bowlers for once put in a combined effort to maintain a tight leash and after the initial break throughs from Praveen Kumar and Nehra the spinners did not allow the batsmen to settle and and maintained the pressure. Finally with some excellent bowling, good fielding and some poor batting display by the Lankans their innings folded at 170. The Indians knew this was a bright chance to go for the bonus point and kick start their series after the lackluster start against the New Zealanders. The openers steadied the innings but there was a mid innings wobble as Karthik, Kohli and Sharma departing in quick succession to leave the Indians tottering at 30 for 3. Then the swashbuckler Sehwag and the effervescent Raina put the innings back on track with a good partnership and later Dhoni joined in with Sehwag to anchor one end up as Sehwag went berserk at the other end to reach his century before the match got over. In the end India did get a huge win with a bonus point but Sehwag was stranded on 99 not out as controversy broke out after the six which he hit of a no ball was no counted as the no ball is counted before the six which left Sehwag stuck on 99 as the match got over on a no ball. A lot of dispute then was going about whether the no ball was a delibrate ploy by the Lankans to abstain Sehwag from getting to a well deserved century but at the end of the day winning is the most important thing that counts which was achieved pretty comfortably, as Sehwag himself put in and as for the fans who were left disappointed for Sehwag not making it to a 100 you can rest assured there are a lot more tons to come from the rampaging Indian hurricane.

Randiv's No Ball Controversy!!!

The game of Cricket saw yet another shameful incident yesterday as Suraj Randiv bowled a no-ball which denied a deserved century to Virender Sehwag in the Micro-Max Cup tri-angular series. Sehwag was on 99 and India needed one run to win the match. Randiv bowled a “Big” no-ball to make India win but making Sehwag not to score a century. Sehwag commented about the incident in the press conference. Yes, it was done deliberately," Sehwag said, shedding the blase attitude with which he had reacted to the incident immediately after the match. "Because [of the size of the no-ball] ... that much from the crease. Till now in Test matches he hasn't bowled a no-ball [Randiv bowled two at the P Sara Oval], he hasn't bowled no-balls in one-day cricket, on 99 only why did he bowl a no-ball? And not a small no-ball, not a small margin, from one foot ahead." He also quoted that this incident happens second time against India. Last time when Scahin Tendulkar was on 96, Malinga bowled four wides down the leg side to deny him a century though India won that match. Several Cricketing giants have expressed their displeasure over the incident. Team captain Kumar Sangakara and the involved spinner Randiv had apologized to team India for such an incident. Anyhow this incident surely shows that the Sri Lankan team has no sportsman-ship in them.

Sehwag Powers India To Victory!!!

After a shaky start India managed a 6 wicket win over the Lankans in the on going triangular series. Sehwag opened the Indian innings with Karthik. Karthik got out for 10 and Kohli and Sharma were also out in a short period. Both of them scored ducks. Then, in came Raina and contributed his part by adding 22 runs to the board before falling to Fernando caught by Tharanga. Sehwag who played a patient innings not of his style though made India win with a bonus point by scoring a scintillating 99 not out(2 sixes and 11 fours). Captain Dhoni scored 23 off 38 balls. Earlier Sri Lanka scored a timid 170 losing all its wickets, Dilshan scored 45, highest score for a Sri Lankan on the day. Tharanga got out on the very first ball of the match by a beauty by Kumar. Ojha took 3 wickets. When Sehwag was on 99 and India needed only one run to win the match, a no-ball was bowled by Randiv which was hit to a six by Sehwag. This doesn’t count because the match ended when no-ball was bowled. Sehwag was awarded with man of the match award!! Sehwag simply rocks!!!

A Costly Miss!!!

The old aphorism seems to be back haunting the Indians again. Started by Steve Waugh in the Sharjah cup, get one man out and we got the match wrapped up. Well no prizes for guessing who that one man Steve Waugh was referring to off course was the one and only Sachin Tendulkar. He was completely missed in the first match of the series against New Zealand even after 2 decades in the game, not only his batting but also his invaluable inputs and motivation for the youngsters was completely missed. The Indians started the match as favourites considering that the new zealanders had brought an inexperienced side but it was them who got the tactics spot on with by stacking their side with a disciplined pace attack on a wicket with spongy bounce and delivered with more intent and zeal. The Indians started both the innings on the right note, had the new zealanders tottering at 28 for 3 but then Taylor and Styris then feasted on the Indian bowling after the initial pressure and forged together a 190 run partnership to take the team to safety and take the team to a above par score of 288 on a tough pitch to bat on. The Indians then were of to a good start with Sehwag and Dinesh Karthik of to a usual brisk pace. Then the disciplined pace attack of the new zealanders bowled a tight line outside the off stump backed up with some great fielding and a listless Indian batting line up wrapped up the Indian side to their fifth lowest one day score and their fourth biggest loss in terms of runs by 200. From now on the pressure and expectations mount on the young Indian team to deliver and will take a lot of planning and belief from the side to come up with the goods to deliver.

Will This Format Be Followed???

In order to make the cricket lovers to love the game more Cricket Australia has planned to introduce a new format in One Day Internationals. In this format four innings will be played in a match. The initial idea was given by Sachin Tendulkar a year ago. Now CA is implementing it. At present this format will only be played in all Australian domestic games and it will be introduced in international as well. Hope it does. Let’s enjoy the new version of the game. The rules of the game are as follows:

• 45 overs per team with split innings of 20 and 25 overs.
• A maximum of 12 overs by any one bowler.
• 10 wickets per team and 12 players per team - teams can bat any 11 of the 12 and field any 11 of the 12.
• A maximum of two bouncers per over.
• A new ball from each end at the start of the innings and no replacement new balls.
• No Powerplays.
• Fielding restrictions: Overs 1-5 = 2 fielders outside the circle; 6-20 = 4 outside; 21-25 = 2 outside, 26-45 = 4 outside.

Will India Retain Their No.2 Spot???

Cricket Cricket and more cricket seems to be that kind of a packed schedule which always is for India and we sure are not complaining. Just as a humdinger of a test series concluded we are off with the one day series with New Zealand coming in to add to the fireworks. This series gathers a lot of importance as is every series from now especially in the sub continent will be looked as a preparation for the world cup starting in 6 months.All the teams will take a very close look at their team strengths and test their bench in order to shortlist the 15 for the world cup and rightly all the 3 teams either resting a lot of top players like Sachin, Vettori and Murali to evaluvate their bench strength. We have seen a lot of Sri lanka vs India matches lately and a lot will be expected from Dhoni as he has a perfect record of 4 out of 4 series wins in the isles the latest being the Asia cup. This will also be a very good test for the New Zealanders as they have come with a relatively young and effervescent bunch, hungry to prove themselves and clearly they are the underdogs with the clear favorites being India and Sri Lanka which might actually work in their favour to play pressure free cricket and cause some upsets. Sri Lankans off course will be expected to do well as they always perform at their best at home. This series apart from being a launchpad to the world cup holds other major significance that is to do with the rankings. Apart from Australia which is leading the pack currently with 132 points all the next 6 teams are placed at just 2 point differences with India in the second place. But by the end of the series India can go down as low as sixth and Lanka climb upto 2nd that is the kind of fluctuation possible. Since teams are so closely stacked each game of the series will see the three tems jumping up and down the rankings. So with a cliffhanger of a series underway will keep you hooked for the next fortnight to spot some new talents or old horses proving a point, new teams at the top of the rankings or already top teama consolidating their positios. IT BEGINS AGAIN!!!

Well the tennis is back in action from today after a brief lull period with the action moving from the lawns of Wimbledon to the hard courts of the U.S. With this being a highly anticipated event for the ardent sports fans who are just getting on with their lives after all the dazzle and sheen of the FIFA word cup going into dormancy. The action picks up right of from the hard courts of Toronto, U.S with Rafael Nadal the Spanish marauder regaining his world no 1 title after some wonderful display of tennis in the last 2 months by regaining the French Open and the illustrious Wimbledon crown. But all the eyes are going to be on the legend and maser who seems to be falling of from his throne or Rather been evicted from the pinnacle by some inspired young guns who seem to be coming of age and finally realizing their talents.Though any normal mortal would happily ride into the sunset with kind of dazzling array of trophies and grand slams under their belt but not Roger Federer arguably the greatest player ever to hold the racket. Though he has fallen of from his world no1 ranking, is outside the top 2 rankings for the first time in 7 years and even after loosing the French Open and Wimbledon crowns to his nemesis nadal and recently getting beaten by some unlikely opponents who earlier used to be afraid to step on the court with him, he still has the passion and fire in him to keep playing at the top level this was proved evidently recently by his appointment of a new coach who has even trained Pete Sampras. The other players to look out for the rest of the season will be the consistent and newly crowned world no 2 Novak Djokovic who has a great camaraderie among his peers and this is evident with his teaming up with Nadal for the doubles action in Toronto. This would be the first time in close to 30 years the world no 1 and 2 in singles will be taking part in the doubles event. Then of course we have the immensely talented and most unlucky guy yet to win a grand slam Andy Murray. Apart from the top players we have the young, strong and effervescent bunch of players like Soderling, Berdych and Tsonga who have been causing ripples in the last few months and who can probably beat anyone on their good days and off course we always have the old horses Andy Roddick and the ice cool man Davydenko who are a constant in the top ten for the last 5 years. From Toronto the action shifts to Cincinnati Masters from where another grand spectacle awaits in the form of the U.S open which is being highly anticipated for a number of great reasons such as whether the defending champion from last year Del Porto will be ready for action after recovering from injury since he has been out of action for nearly 6 months and showed as what he has got last year by winning his maiden slam at a young age of 20 at the U.S Open and by beating the two top players of the world back to back in the semis and finals, another eager anticipation would be on Roger Federer whether he can make another come back and prove his mettle or is his time up for real, the spotlight off course will be on Rafa whether he can cement his place at the top of the men's game and move into the pantheon of other great legends of the game or do the hungry and inspired pack of youngsters out there have other ideas. Rivalry Ends With A Tie!!!

What an enthralling end to a long series keenly fought between the two sub-continental giants. At the end of it India was able to come out with its head held high. This series started off with the news of the wizard of spin Muralitharan’s announcement of retirement after the first test. The first test was a perfect end to an illustrious and possibly to an unreplicable feat of a highly distinguished career which ended on 800 wickets and which the Lankans perfectly wrapped up with some brilliant all-round performances from Malinga and with the batting exploits of Sangakara and Paravantira with the lone positive for the Indians being Sehwag’s batting. Once the second test started the Indians felt a sigh o relief with Muralis retirement and Malinga’s absence in the match due to injury but Dhoni’s dismal luck with the coin continued and once again we were left with the catching up act. With some scintillating performance again from Sangakara and also the wily Jayawardene but this time the god of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar was in his elements and showed his complete class and mastery to make up for the disappointment of the first test and along with the most experienced and probably one of the brightest talents in India, Suresh Raina forged together the highest partnership for the 5th wicket to pull India out from the doldrums and more importantly give some confidence to the side and arrest the momentum flow the Lankans had prior to this match. The match though as predicted on a dead pitch came to a tame draw. The third test was a very highly anticipated one since a Lankan win would have put them on top of the rankings and dislodged us from the pinnacle. The match started inauspiciously as throughout the series with Dhoni loosing another toss but this time the pitch was a more sportive one and gave the bowlers a fair chance and this generated better interest in the match from the viewers perspective. This time there were no huge scores as in the previous matches and by the end of the 1^st innings India managed a lead but only just by 13 runs with some staunch batting from Samarweera, Sehwag and Raina who seems to already be growing in his stature. The 2^nd innings started on a positive note for the Lankans and with literally no bowlers it was left to Sehwag to provide the inspiration and belief to the side with his late 2 strikes of the day. The 4^th day all of a sudden India seemed to have some teeth in its bowling and the bowlers with a spring in their step left the Lankans tottering at 87 for 7 and a possibility of win from complete oblivion and a chance to draw the series and consolidate their position at the top of the rankings. But India as we know seems to be the hub for all the tail enders to fast on with Mendis making his highest score in the company of Samaraweera with a record 9^th wicket partnership set India a challenging target of 242 on a crumbling wicket. And India known to be perennially the worst chasers under pressure on a crumbling pitch made the worst possible start by losing their go to man under these situations Sehwag by a brilliant tactical move from sangakara by opening the bowling with Randiv. The day ended precariously for India with the wall, Dravid and Vijay also back to the pavilion and the score on 47 for 3. The only ray of hope as always in his 20 year cricketing career was the presence of the master blaster till at the crease. The biggest turning point of the series was on the next morning a drop catch by Dilshan of the little master which could have literally sealed the deal for the Lankans but the master continued in the company of the very special silent warrior Laxman to guide India to safety. But then Sachin got out after making yet another half century giving Lankans a second lease of life, but the resolute and determined Raina along with the company of the stylish Laxman who scored yet another century making it yet another landmark in his career to take India to victory and solidify its position at the apogee of the sport and with the end of the series, brought down the curtains to the biggest smallest man of cricket and the best bowler in the world Muttiah Muralitharan. Kudos to our team for yet another stellar, peerless, scintillating and a memorable performance. Dhoni’s men simply rocks!!!
